When we compare parameters of modern digital multimeters, we can be easily attracted with their measurement precision or powerful set of functionalities, but we totally forget about the most important thing – safety. The level of protection offered by a particular meter depends primarily on the type of cables insulation and on other factors described in the PN-EN61010 standard.
According to the PN-EN61010 standard, the safety category describes conditions for permitted use of a device:
Unfortunately, multimeters compliant with the CAT IV safety category are usually very expensive. Their manufacturers often equip them with numerous advanced functionalities, and hence their price is high. However, very often what we actually need is a robust design and convenience of use, not state-of-the-art functionalities.
